The Specials
The Specials were at the forefront of the late-’70s British ska revival. Combining elements of ska, reggae, rocksteady, punk, and new wave, they pioneered the 2 Tone genre, which characterized the Second Wave of ska and set the stage for bands like Madness and the English Beat. From their eponymous, Elvis Costello-produced 1979 debut, featuring their hit cover of Dandy Livingstone’s “Rudy, A Message to You” (altered to “A Message to You, Rudy”), to their hit 1981 single “Ghost Town” and 1984 anti-apartheid anthem “Free Nelson Mandela” (released under their original name, the Special AKA), the Specials are stellar on vinyl.
