Smiley Smile
After Brian Wilson’s epic attempt to change pop music forever, Smile, was shelved, the Beach Boys redirected their efforts and released Smiley Smile. Featuring re-recorded portions of Smile’s “Wind Chimes,” “Vegetables,” “Wonderful,” and mini-opera “Heroes and Villains,” Smiley Smile is full of unusual arrangements and psychedelic flavor. Its most vital achievement is the hit single “Good Vibrations.” Recorded in three studios over six months, Wilson has referred to this song as a “pocket symphony,” and it is one of the most densely woven and complex songs ever recorded. It features layers of perfect vocal tracks on top of drums, organ, piano, two basses, guitars, electro-theremin, harmonica, and cello. Experimental yet controlled and tight, the song became the Beach Boys’ biggest hit to date, and many critics consider it to be one of the best rock singles of all time.
