Borboletta
Released during Santana’s jazz-fusion period, Borboletta shows the influence of soul and Brazilian textures into the band’s sound. The cover artwork is an allusion to Butterfly Dreams, an album by Brazilian jazz singer Flora Purim and her husband, percussionist Airto Moreira. Together, these two open the album with “Spring Manifestations,” and Moreira alone closes it with the title track. Additional guests include Leon Patillo who lends his spiritual voice to “Mirage.” John Coltrane’s influence is also evident on “Here and Now,” and the soprano sax of Jules Broussard can be heard on the free-flowing jazz instrumental “Aspirations” alongside Tom Coster’s organ. With so many guests on the album, Carlos Santana sits a few songs out, but his performance is top-notch on the eight that he does play. Of these, the gospel-tinged “Practice What You Preach,” the funky “Give and Take,” and the album highlight “Promise of a Fisherman” are excellent.
