Made in England
Released less than a year after his 10-times platinum Grammy and Oscar-winning Lion King soundtrack, Elton John’s Made in England (1995) finds the accomplished artist going back to basics. Under the new guidance of producer Greg Penny, the album best recalls John’s classic 1970s period as he abandons the electronic sounds of the last decade and reintroduces the string arrangements of Paul Buckmaster. Many consider Made in England to showcase some of Bernie Taupin’s best lyrics, which like the album’s one-word song titles, are more direct here. “Man” features guest organist Paul Carrack, and Beatles producer George Martin arranges horns and strings on the folk-waltz “Latitude.” The powerful John Lennon-esque ballad “Believe” became a hit single and earned John a Grammy nomination. While there isn’t a bad song on this album, standouts include the rocking autobiographical title track, the beautifully haunting “Belfast” with Buckmaster’s masterful string arrangements, and closer “Blessed.” (Vinyl is import-only.)
