Here and There
Elton John’s second live album, Here and There (1976) includes songs from two different concerts: “Here” at London’s Royal Festival Hall on May 18, 1974, and “There” at New York City’s Madison Square Garden six months later over Thanksgiving weekend. A benefit show for the Invalid Children’s Aid Society, the “Here” set is much more well-mannered. It begins with John performing his early hit “Skyline Pigeon” solo before guitarist Davey Johnstone, bassist Dee Murray, drummer Nigel Olsson, and percussionist Ray Cooper join him onstage for classic performances of “Honky Cat” and “Crocodile Rock.” “Here” also features a rare duet on “Love Song” with its author Leslie Duncan. In contrast, the Madison Square Garden show was an over-the-top Elton John spectacle with a massive audience reciprocating that crazy energy.
