  • Stanley Turrentine

The original Mr. T, Stanley Turrentine was one of the premier tenor saxophonists in jazz, known for his thick, rippling tone and big, warm sound. He got his start playing with various blues and R&B bands in the ‘50s and went on to explore organ-driven soul jazz with the great Jimmy Smith in the ‘60s. After signing to Creed Taylor’s CTI label, Turrentine recorded a string of pop-friendly albums in the ‘70s highlighted by Sugar, Salt Song, and Don’t Mess with Mister T. He then returned to his trademark soul-jazz sound in the ‘80s and ‘90s, leaving us with a bevy of work that’s exceptional on vinyl.
