Johnny Mathis
An Olympic hopeful who opted instead for a recording career, Johnny Mathis became what Johnny Carson called “the best ballad singer in the world.” Largely associated with romantic jazz and pop standards, Mathis enjoyed a string of successful singles early in his career (1957’s “Wonderful! Wonderful!” “It’s Not for Me to Say,” and “Chances Are,” for example) and already had enough material for a Greatest Hits album in 1958—releasing the first-ever album of this type. He then became a popular album artist, especially well known for his Christmas albums. Trained by an opera coach in his teenage years, Mathis has some incredible pipes, and his velvet voice is decadent on vinyl.
