Crossings
The second album from Herbie Hancock’s Mwandishi period, Crossings features his electronic sextet with the addition of Patrick Gleeson and his Moog synthesizer. Crossings (and Gleeson) pioneered the use of synthesizer in jazz, and with this new voice Hancock goes deeper into the electronic avant-garde. Side One features Hancock’s five-part suite, “Sleeping Giant,” which incorporates funky grooves, tribal percussion, and his Fender Rhodes. Grand in scope and execution, it is the centerpiece of the album – as well as Hancock’s experimental period – and is both challenging and catchy. Gleeson’s Moog effects take Side Two higher into the spacey jazz atmosphere. Featuring two Bennie Maupin compositions, this side is equal parts abstract and mesmerizing. Eddie Henderson proves there is still a place for traditional jazz instruments amidst the ethereal electronic textures, and enhances the mood on “Quasar” with his fluttering trumpet. “Water Torture” is even more free-form, and its electronic soundscapes are colored by a cosmic mellotron.
