Wild Things Run Fast
Following her mid-’70s foray into jazz, Joni Mitchell embraces the new decade’s pop sound on Wild Things Run Fast. The album comes after a three-year break, during which time Mitchell immersed herself in her first love, painting, and married her bassist Larry Klein. Mitchell’s admiration of the Police shows in the rock-steady rhythms achieved by Klein and drummer Vinnie Colaiuta. Mitchell also reveals a developing taste for synths and takes liberty with everything from Elvis to the Bible, updating “(You’re So Square) Baby I Don’t Care” with a rock edge and retranslating Chapter 13 from 1 Corinthians on “Love.” Album highlight “Man to Man” features Mitchell in a duet with former lover James Taylor, and Lionel Richie steps in on “Ladies Man” and “You Dream Flat Tires.” Summarizing everything she had to say about love, Wild Things Run Fast is Mitchell finally expressing happiness without qualifying it.
