Majikat
Though this live album wasn’t released until 2004 – long after Cat Stevens had become Yusuf Islam and retired from his pop career, Majikat was recorded during the U.S. leg of Stevens’ 1976 Earth Tour. The set list spans his ’70s career, and with the exception of Catch Bull at Four, represents everything from Mona Bone Jakon to Numbers, the album he was on tour promoting. For his enthusiastic U.S. audience, he performs faithful renditions of his big hits and finally breaks his silence towards the end to add engaging commentary. He has a few notable revelations, like he may have been writing “Sad Lisa” about himself, and his recent single “Two Fine People” was a musical rewrite of “Wild World.” The album also features his Sam Cooke cover, “Another Saturday Night,” previously only released as a single and on Cat Stevens’ Greatest Hits. In many ways, Majikat is a Greatest Hits compilation itself, but with the “majik” of a live show.
