Dmitri Shostakovich is a famous composer of the Soviet period. This Russian composer was influenced by classical music artists such as Stravinsky and Prokofiev. He had a hybrid of styles including the modernist style and neoclassical style. His music had sharp contrasts and elements of the grotesque and is amazing in technique. Best heard on vinyl, this music takes to you to times where symphonies and string quartets were intense and well projected. His withdrawn “Fourth Symphony” is one of his most famous works that show his mixture of the classic and modern approach to music and is now considered one of the leaders of “serious music” of the 20th century.
