  • Vinyl Releases of the Week: May 18, 2011

Albums from ’90s stalwarts Moby and the Deftones, 180-gram Bob Dylan reissues, a massive Hollies box set, and some Jesus and Mary Chain reissues from last week that somehow slipped by me – these are just a few of the vinyl releases you can get your hands on this week.

Bob DylanBob Dylan’s Greatest Hits, John Wesley Harding (Sundazed)
Sundazed honors Bob Dylan’s 70th birthday (on May 24) with these two 180-gram mono-edition vinyl reissues. The first albums released after Dylan’s serious 1966 motorcycle accident, they capture two very different sides of the artist. 1967’s Greatest Hits features classic songs from his first prolific period including “The Times They Are a-Changin’,” “It Ain’t Me Babe,” “Mr. Tambourine Man,” “Like a Rolling Stone,” and “Blowin’ in the Wind,” while the country-tinged John Wesley Harding (1968), which features “All Along the Watchtower” and “I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight,” marked a turning point in Dylan’s career.

The HolliesLost Recordings and Beat Rarities (Sundazed)
As its name suggests, this incredible box set features 20 lost tracks and rare gems from the beloved Manchester band. In the spirit of the original Hollies 45s, these are contained on 10 7-inch discs, and range from rare U.S. and British singles to spy-style Italian movie tracks, unreleased tracks from a 1965 tour, and an extremely rare cover of the Beatles’ “If I Needed Someone,” tracked at Abbey Road.

    The Go-Go’s
    Beauty and the Beat (Capitol)
30th anniversary pink vinyl reissue of the Go-Go’s chart-topping 1981 debut. Featuring the hits “Our Lips Are Sealed” and ” We Got the Beat,” this is a cornerstone new wave album.

The ReplacementsDon’t Tell a Soul (Original Recordings Group)
Originally released in 1989, this more rock-oriented album features the Replacements’ only song to crack the U.S. singles chart, “I’ll Be You,” and is considered one of their most criminally underrated albums. 140-gram reissue from the original analog tapes featuring a reproduction of the original artwork.

The RentalsResilience (Ernest Jenning Record Co.)
A benefit album for the Japan relief effort, Resilience features 18 orchestral, short-film scores written, arranged, and performed by Lauren Chipman and former Weezer bassist Matt Sharp for their “Songs About Time” multi-media project. Guests include Nikolai Fraiture of the Strokes, Rodrigo Amarante of Little Joy/Los Hermanos, French musician Emilie Simon, Gorka Urbizu of Berri Txarrak, violinist Danielle Belen, and Portuguese actress Dalila Carmo. Now available on 180-gram vinyl.

    LCD SoundsystemLondon Sessions (DFA Records)
Recorded on June 29, 2010 after the band’s Glastonbury Festival performance, this limited double vinyl LP features live in-studio versions of LCD Soundsystem classics like “Drunk Girls,” “Daft Punk Is Playing at My House,” and “All My Friends,” as well as the rare b-side “Yr City’s a Sucker.”

The Jesus and Mary ChainHoney’s Dead, Automatic (Plain Recordings)
Limited 180-gram reissues of the Scottish alternative rock band’s third and fourth albums. Originally released in 1989, Automatic features the track “Head On” and 1992’s Honey’s Dead includes “Reverence,” “Almost Gold,” and “Rollercoaster.”

    Deftones Around the Fur (Maverick)
180-gram reissue of the 1997 album that put the Sacramento band at the forefront of the ’90s alternative metal scene. Features the singles “My Own Summer (Shove It)” and “Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away).”

    MobyDestroyed (Mute)
Moby describes his new album as “a soundtrack for empty cities at 2 a.m.” Written on tour, during the middle of the night, while awake with insomnia, it contrasts feelings of alienation with the exuberance of performing. Double gatefold LP.

Levon HelmRamble at the Ryman (Vanguard Records)
In commemoration of Levon Helm Day on May 20th, Vanguard Records has released this live recording from the former Band member’s 2008 performance at Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium. The set features classic songs by the Band like “Ophelia,” “The Weight,” and “The Shape I’m In” along with Helm originals and covers ranging from the Carter Family’s “No Depression in Heaven” to the Grateful Dead’s “Deep Elem Blues.” Joining the Levon Helm Band are guests Buddy Miller, Sam Bush, Sheryl Crow, John Hiatt, George Receli, and Billy Bob Thornton.

Hank Williams IIIHillbilly Joker (Curb Records)
The long awaited punk-inspired album (originally titled “This Ain’t Country”) from the grandson of country music legend Hank Williams. The source of much contention between Hank III and his label, the heavily bootlegged 2003 project finally sees a release – and on 180-gram clear vinyl with black, red, and white flecking, no less – repackaged with additional unreleased material.

The Incredible String BandWee Tam and The Big Huge (4 Men with Beards)
Originally released in 1968 as two separate LPs in the U.S. and as one two-disc set elsewhere, Wee Tam and The Big Huge feature some of the Scottish psychedelic folk band’s best known works and finest vocal harmonies. Featuring songwriters Robin Williamson and Mike Heron augmented by their girlfriends Christina “Licorice” McKechnie and Rose Simpson, the albums mix ’60s mysticism with ancient British Isles folk, Eastern instrumentation, and a quirky sense of humor.

    Fleet FoxesHelplessness Blues (Sub Pop)
This double LP is a richer, more ambitious follow-up to the Seattle folk sextet’s widely acclaimed 2008 self-titled debut. Drawing inspiration from the ’60s folk boom, Helplessness Blues sets Fleet Foxes’ hymnal-like vocal harmonies to more direct lyrics and intricate instrumentation that includes flute, sax, and Tibetan singing bowls.

Brandi CarlileLive at Benaroya Hall with the Seattle Symphony (Columbia)
This double concert LP from the breakthrough Seattle singer-songwriter captures two sold-out shows at the esteemed Seattle concert hall. Packaged in a gatefold sleeve with special glow-in-the-dark ink.

    Green DayAwesome as F**k (Adeline)

Jefferson AirplaneWorst of Jefferson Airplane (Friday Music)

Includes late-’60s anthems like “Somebody to Love” and “White Rabbit,” and features the original 1970 gatefold cover artwork that has been missing from past reissues.

    T. RexTanx, Zinc Alloy & the Hidden Riders of Tomorrow (Fat Possum)
Following the reissue of T. Rex’s 1972 album The Slider last fall, Fat Possum is set to reissue 1973’s Tanx and its 1974 follow-up, Zinc Alloy & the Hidden Riders of Tomorrow. These two albums mark frontman Marc Bolan’s departure from glam rock in favor of a more soul-oriented sound.

Emerson, Lake & PalmerEmerson, Lake & Palmer (Music on Vinyl Import)

    New Releases:

Explosions in the SkyTake Care, Take Care, Take Care (Temporary Residence)
Austin, Texas instrumental post-rock band Explosions in the Sky pulled out all the stops for Take Care, Take Care, Take Care. This double LP features a 10-panel, quadruple gatefold jacket that actually folds into a house. It also features an engraving on Side D, and (while supplies last) comes in three different colors to correspond with the three different artwork variants.

Holly Golightly & the BrokeoffsNo Help Coming (Transdreamer)
The fourth full-length release from Holly Golightly & the Brokeoffs (a duo featuring the influential London-born garage-rock icon and longtime collaborator/multi-instrumentalist Lawyer Dave) stays true to Golightly’s lo-fi roots while drawing upon blues, country, and rockabilly influences. A fantastic mix of originals and unexpected covers.

    Of MontrealThecontrollersphere EP (Polyvinyl)
“This little EP is a freak-out record.” -Kevin Barnes, leader of the Athens, Georgia psych-pop band. A collection of five tracks that were too left-field to fit any of the band’s studio albums (imagine that!), this 10-inch EP is full of unpredictable turns and schizophrenic musical statements. Included is the studio version of live favorite “Black Lion Massacre,” one of the band’s darkest and noisiest songs to date.

Prefuse 73The Only She Chapters (Warp)
Employing a new recording process and an all-female cast of guest vocalists including Zola Jesus, Shara Worden of My Brightest Diamond, and the late Trish Keenan of Broadcast, Guillermo Scott Herren moves away from his typically glitchy experimental hip-hop to create a textured compositional masterpiece.

Thao & MirahThao & Mirah (Kill Rock Stars)
A dream collaboration between the raw and bluesy singer-songwriter/guitarist Thao Nguyen and the more introspective indie-folk honeybee Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlyn. tUnE-yArDs Merrill Garbus co-produced the album and helped write the unapologetically pop single “Eleven.”

    Times New VikingDancer Equired (Merge)
For its Merge Records debut, the lo-fi Ohio trio went into the studio – a first for a band that recorded its last album on VHS tape. While preserving its rough charm, Times New Viking turns down the grating noise and shines a brighter light on songwriting and melody.
