First Vinyl Releases of 2013

Last year brought us the Beatles’ highly anticipated 180-gram vinyl stereo reissues, a comprehensive Who vinyl box set, and new music from Neil Young, Bob Dylan, and the Beach Boys; meanwhile, Jack White made history by ousting Abbey Road from the top-selling vinyl spot with his solo debut, Blunderbuss. But so far, 2013 is all about mono with heavyweight vinyl reissues from Miles Davis, Johnny Cash, and Big Brother & the Holding Company.
Miles Davis – Miles Ahead, Porgy and Bess, Sketches of Spain (Sony Legacy)
Sony Legacy kicks off the new year with 180-gram mono reissues of three essential Miles Davis/Gil Evans collaborations: 1957’s Miles Ahead, 1959’s Porgy and Bess, and 1960’s Sketches of Spain.
Bob Dylan – Bringing It All Back Home (Mobile Fidelity)
Bob Dylan’s 1965 landmark album, remastered from the original tapes and pressed on 45RPM LPs. The wider, deeper grooves make this already organic album sound more present than ever.
Quicksilver Messenger Service – Happy Trails (Friday Music)
For the first time on 180-gram audiophile vinyl is this legendary 1969 live album from Quicksilver Messenger Service, which brilliantly captures the spirit of San Francisco in the ’60s.
Big Brother & the Holding Company – Cheap Thrills (Sony Legacy)
Speaking of San Francisco in the ’60s, Sony Legacy has reissued the original mono version of this 1968 classic on 180-gram vinyl! The last album Janis Joplin recorded with the band before going solo, Cheap Thrills features her definitive hits “Summertime” and “Piece of My Heart.”
Johnny Cash – The Fabulous Johnny Cash (Sony Legacy)
Another album to receive a 180-gram mono reissue from Sony Legacy is this classic 1958 album from the Man in Black.
The Rascals – Time Peace: The Rascals’ Greatest Hits (Friday Music)
Originally released in 1968, this chart-topping greatest hits compilation from the Rascals (formerly the Young Rascals) remains their top-selling album and is now available on 180-gram audiophile vinyl.
Boz Scaggs – Some Change (Friday Music)
Boz Scaggs’ 1994 masterwork, Some Change, can now be enjoyed on 180-gram audiophile vinyl.
Jeff Beck – Jeff Beck’s Guitar Shop (Friday Music)
Also on 180-gram vinyl for the first time is guitar legend Jeff Beck’s 1989 collaboration with fellow virtuosos Terry Bozzio on drums and Tony Hymas on keys.
MC5 – Kick Out the Jams (Rhino Records)
Limited 180-gram vinyl pressing of the 1969 debut album from the Detroit garage-rock icons.
The B-52’s – Cosmic Thing (Mobile Fidelity)
Vinyl reissue of the quirky new wave band’s multi-platinum 1989 album featuring their ubiquitous hit “Love Shack.” According to Mobile Fidelity, “This Silver Label LP dazzles with glorious textures, deeper low-end frequencies, more pronounced mid-range information, and enhanced vocal dynamics absent from prior editions.”
Ani DiFranco – Dilate (Righteous Babe)
Vinyl reissue of Ani DiFranco’s critically acclaimed 1996 album, Dilate, which remains her highest-selling to date.
Incubus – S.C.I.E.N.C.E., Make Yourself, Morning View, A Crow Left of the Murder…, Light Grenades (Sony Legacy)
Incubus fans will be excited to hear that Sony Legacy has reissued a large chunk of the hard-rock band’s catalog on 180-gram vinyl!
Dropkick Murphys – Signed and Sealed in Blood (Dropkick Murphys)
Double vinyl pressing of the Irish-influenced punk band’s brand new studio album and eighth to date. Includes the vinyl-only bonus track “Shark Attack.”
The National – The Virginia EP (Beggars Banquet)
Originally released as a companion piece to the DVD A Skin, A Night and now for the first time on vinyl is this compilation of B-sides and rarities from the Boxer era.
Edith Piaf – La Vie En Rose (Cleopatra)
Gorgeous 12-inch vinyl picture disc compilation of classics from the treasured French vocalist.
Sean Lennon – Alter Egos (Chimera Music)
Vinyl pressing of Sean Lennon’s Alter Egos film score.
Mystical Weapons – Mystical Weapons (Chimera Music)
Instrumental psych-rock debut album from the duo of Sean Lennon and Greg Saunier (Deerhoof).
