Pennywise
Formed in 1988, this Hermosa Beach foursome is one of the most successful independent punk bands of all time. Drawing from the California hardcore punk scene of the late ’80s and adopting a speedy style marked by powerful guitar riffs and optimistic lyrics, they helped define the West Coast punk sound of the ‘90s along with fellow California bands like Green Day, The Offspring, NOFX, and Bad Religion. They found mainstream success in 1995 with their third studio album, About Time, and though they were courted by the majors, they chose to continue releasing a steady stream of albums on the independent label Epitaph Records. Fortunately, Epitaph likes vinyl as Pennywise’s distinct skate-punk sound is awesome on wax.
