The Smashing Pumpkins
The Smashing Pumpkins were one of the biggest alternative rock bands of the ’90s. Formed in Chicago in 1988, they caught the attention of the mainstream with their 1993 sophomore album, Siamese Dream, and solidified their success with 1995’s double album, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. The band’s original lineup consisted of rhythm guitarist James Iha, drummer Jimmy Chamberlain, bassist D’arcy Wretzky, and frontman/mastermind Billy Corgan. While Nirvana and other alt-rock bands of the time were embracing a raw, punk ethos, the Pumpkins were creating glorious rock anthems full of dense layers, searing guitar solos, elaborate compositions, and shimmering beauty. (Do I even need to say how incredible they sound on vinyl?) Though the original incarnation of the group disbanded in 2000, Corgan reformed the Pumpkins in 2006 and continues to record and tour.
