Me First and the Gimme Gimmes
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes are both a supergroup and a cover band. Featuring singer Spike Slawson of Swingin’ Utters, guitarist Chris Shiflett of Foo Fighters, bassist “Fat Mike” Burkett of NOFX, and drummer Dave Raun and guitarist Joey Cape of Lagwagon, the Gimme Gimmes are known for their ability to interpolate bits of punk rock classics into anything. With each new album comes a new theme: 1997’s Have a Ball takes on classic singer-songwriters like Elton John, Neil Diamond, and Paul Simon; 1999’s Are a Drag takes on showtunes; 2001’s Blow in the Wind covers the hits of the ’60s; 2003’s Take a Break covers contemporary R&B; 2004’s Ruin Jonny’s Bar Mitzvah is a live album featuring pop hits of the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s and recorded at an actual bar mitzvah; 2006’s Love Their Country covers both classic and contemporary country artists; 2008’s Have Another Ball! is just what it sounds like: a sequel to their debut; and their latest, 2011’s Sing in Japanese, covers Japanese songs in Japanese! This band is probably the most fun you can have on vinyl.
