The Black Crowes
In 1990, as alternative rock was planting the seeds for the grunge explosion, Atlanta, Georgia’s Black Crowes did the unthinkable: they released an album of ’70s blues-rock revivalism. Propelled by a cover of Otis Redding’s “Hard to Handle,” their debut, Shake Your Money Maker, went multi-platinum and the Crowes’ career right along with it. Heavily influenced by the Rolling Stones and Faces and rooted in old-fashioned Southern rock, the Black Crowes became a popular live act throughout the ’90s and even collaborated with Jimmy Page at the end of the decade. Frontman Chris Robinson’s raw rock ‘n’ roll swagger and his brother Rich Robinson’s killer guitar work have earned the Crowes the title of America’s Most Rock ‘n’ Roll Band.
