Duets
Initially a Christmas project, Elton John’s 1993 release Duets became a full-fledged double LP. Each side begins with a duet with a female singer and ends with a duet with a male singer. John takes some bold risks in his selection of guests: Little Richard, Don Henley, Tammy Wynette, Leonard Cohen, Gladys Knight, and drag queen RuPaul, among others. His live duet with George Michael, “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me,” had already topped the US and UK charts in 1991 when it was released as single to benefit the London Lighthouse AIDS hospice. A big success overseas, Duets yielded three more hits in the UK: “True Love” with Kiki Dee, the campy “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” with RuPaul, and “Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing” with Marcella Detroit. The album closes with the aptly titled “Duets for One,” a solo track by John. Vinyl copies are rare, but worth the hunt.
