Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is the Emerald City of Elton John’s career. His second release of 1973, it is one of his most famous and has earned its place in pop history as one of the greatest albums of all time. The double LP features the Marilyn Monroe tribute “Candle in the Wind,” as well as hit singles “Bennie and the Jets,” “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” and “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting.” “All the Girls Love Alice” and “Harmony” also became radio favorites. As its title suggests, fantasy and nostalgia run through Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, experienced through the lens of great American cinema. Musically, the album also twists and turns like its title, beginning with the 11-minute prog-rock opening suite “Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding,” and moving through the steel drum groove of “Jamaica Jerk-off,” the bluesy “I’ve Seen that Movie Too,” the Stones-influenced “Dirty Little Girl,” and the ’50s sock hop “Your Sister Can’t Twist (But She Can Rock ‘n’ Roll).” Astoundingly, Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics for this elaborate widescreen classic in just two and a half weeks, and John composed most of the music in only three days.
