  • Talib Kweli

This Brooklyn rapper made his underground debut in 1995, but it was his 1998 collaboration with Mos Def and DJ Hi-Tek as Black Star that turned heads and opened minds. Black Star’s jazz-rooted old school rap, which preached the teachings of Marcus Garvey and called for awareness versus violence, fit right in with the wave of conscious hip-hop at the time and jumpstarted Talib Kweli’s career. Though Def went into acting, Kweli remained one of the most respected rappers of the mid-’00s, boosted by Jay-Z’s famous lyrical shout-out, “If skills sold, truth be told/I’d probably be, lyrically, Talib Kweli,” from “Moment of Clarity.” Kweli has continued to collaborate with Hi-Tek and also began collaborating with a then-unknown Kanye West on Kweli’s 2002 solo debut, Quality. Following this up with The Beautiful Struggle (2004), Eardrum (2007), and Gutter Rainbows (2011), Kweli is still going strong as one of hip-hop’s greatest living legends.
