Shadows and Light
Shadows and Light is Joni Mitchell’s second live album. Recorded during her 1979 Mingus tour, it features jazzy Joni and draws mainly from The Hissing of Summer Lawns, Hejira, and Mingus. The re-sequencing of these songs in a live setting brings out new themes, and the crowd’s enthusiasm brings out the electricity of the performances. With an all-star stage ensemble – guitarist Pat Metheny, bassist Jaco Pastorius, keyboardist Lyle Mays, saxophonist Michael Brecker, and drummer Don Alias – Mitchell is able to concentrate fully on her vocals and electric guitar. “Shadows and Light” is the album’s centerpiece. The Persuasions, who opened for Mitchell on this tour, step in like a gospel choir where Mitchell’s multi-tracked vocals once were. They also inject an a cappella doo-wop into Mitchell’s cover of “Why Do Fools Fall in Love?” Missing from the initial CD release, the Shadows and Light double LP contains not-to-be-missed live versions of “Black Crow” and “Free Man in Paris.”
