Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter
The end of her Asylum Records contract approaching, Joni Mitchell chose to take risks on her 1977 double album, Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter. More abstract and experimental than any of her previous work, Don Juan is considerably progressive in its mix of rock, jazz, fusion, and classical. The 16-minute “Paprika Plains” features Mitchell’s improvised piano and a full orchestra. “Overture” is played with six differently tuned guitars, and “The Tenth World” is a conga jam featuring Brazilian percussionist Airto Moriera and backing vocals from a young Chaka Khan. Jaco Pastorius returns on bass and his influence is most dominant here, brilliantly complementing Mitchell’s vocals on the title track. The album attracted a host of prominent jazz musicians, including Weather Report’s Wayne Shorter whose soprano saxophone can be heard on “Jericho” and “Paprika Plains.” Don Juan also peaked the interest of modern jazz giant Charles Mingus, thus inspiring the collaboration that resulted in Mitchell’s next epic work.
