Dog Eat Dog
Co-produced by British synth master Thomas Dolby, Dog Eat Dog is of its time in everything from its Reagan-era socio-political commentary to its heavy use of the Fairlight synthesizer. Needless to say, this is not your typical introspective Joni. A far cry from Wild Things Run Fast’s musings on love, Dog Eat Dog features some of Mitchell’s angriest lyrics as it takes a scathing look at televangelists (“Tax Free”), yuppie materialism (“Shiny Toys”), the ecological crisis in Ethiopia (“Ethiopia”), and “madmen who sit up building bombs and making laws” (“The Three Great Stimulants”). Michael McDonald, Don Henley, James Taylor, and Wayne Shorter all guest on the album – along with a cigarette machine that works as percussion on “Smokin’ (Empty, Try Another).” For all of its vitriol towards ’80s hedonism, Dog Eat Dog ends on a high note with “Lucky Girl” as Mitchell celebrates her relationship with husband Larry Klein.
