Secrets
Secrets is the last of Herbie Hancock’s Head Hunters funk-fusion albums, and his first to move toward more mainstream accessibility. This is most evident on album opener “Doin’ It,” a heavy funk song with a danceable groove. As on Man-Child, Motown session musician Melvin “Wah-Wah Watson” Ragin plays electric guitar, and his colorful rhythm guitar contributions really help define the character of Secrets. With the exception of the opening track and some intense moments in the second half, Secrets takes after the more laidback tracks on Man-Child in its preference for smooth, rolling grooves over high-energy funk. Hancock brings this out with the tones of his Fender Rhodes and his new polyphonic synthesizers. He switches to piano for a brilliant solo on Bennie Maupin’s “Sansho Shima,” and Maupin himself heightens the album with his own inspired woodwind solos. Like on Head Hunters, Hancock revisits one of his standards here, turning “Cantelope [sic] Island” into a swaggering song with a relaxed Caribbean feel.
