Maiden Voyage
Herbie Hancock’s fifth album, Maiden Voyage, evokes the ocean with its imagery of marine life and tidal dynamics. Like its predecessor, Empyrean Isles, it is a 1960s jazz milestone that produced the standards “Little One,” “The Eye of the Hurricane,” “Dolphin Dance,” and the title track. Featuring the same lineup as Isles (the rhythm section of Miles Davis’ second great quintet) with the addition of George Coleman on tenor sax, the group achieves the perfect balance of innovative risk-taking and melodic accessibility. The influence of Miles’ modal experiments is evident here, with “Maiden Voyage” being one of the most famous modal jazz pieces of all time. Freddie Hubbard plays his usual trumpet instead of cornet, and the musician’s unpredictable solos, tonal textures, and superb harmonies make this album one of the best. “Maiden Voyage” was covered by jazz rock band Blood, Sweat, and Tears for their 1972 album New Blood and by Toto for their 2002 album Through the Looking Glass.
