Head Hunters
After his largely experimental Mwandishi period, Herbie Hancock took a whole-hearted leap into electro jazz-funk fusion and recorded one of the most influential albums of all time. With the help of his new band, The Headhunters – Paul Jackson (bass), Harvey Mason (drums), Bill Summers (percussion), and Bennie Maupin (woodwinds) – Hancock fuses funky R&B rhythms with jazz sensibilities, and proves that you can improvise while still maintaining a groove. Dedicated to Sly Stone, “Sly” features a wall of percussion and double-time sax and electric piano solos. Hancock also reworks his hard-bop classic “Watermelon Man,” stretching it out to allow its funk rhythms to come through. “Chameleon” features a funky bass line played by an ARP Odyssey synth (which Hancock had taken up himself), while “Vein Melter” is more airy and meditative. One of the largest-selling jazz albums of all time, what’s most significant about Head Hunters is its profound crossover appeal and impact on other genres – from soul to hip-hop to electronic dance music.
