  • Symphony No. 2

Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2 in D major (Op. 36) was composed sometime between 1801-1802 while he was staying at Heiligenstadt, and is dedicated to Prince Lichnowsky. It was a period during which Beethoven’s deafness was becoming more apparent and the realization that it might be incurable was dawning on the composer. The work was premiered on April 5, 1803 and although most critics received it with positive reviews, some considered it too eccentric for its use of a scherzo in lieu of the standard minuet. The 36 minute piece is also notable as one of the final works of Beethoven’s “Early Period”.

    Symphony No. 2 Movements:

    1. Adagio molto – Allegro con brio
    2. Larghetto
    3. Scherzo: Allegro
    4. Allegro molto
