The Cars
One of the most successful new wave bands of the late ’70s and early ’80s, The Cars released a string of platinum albums and Top 40 singles including classics like “Just What I Needed,” “You’re All I’ve Got Tonight,” “My Best Friend’s Girl,” “Drive,” “Let’s Go,” “You Might Think,” “Magic,” and “Shake It Up.” Featuring singer/guitarist Ric Ocasek, singer/bassist Benjamin Orr, guitarist Elliot Easton, keyboardist Greg Hawkes, and drummer David Robinson, The Cars were one of the few groups to embrace both synth pop and harder rock, while building on their proto-punk foundation. This gave them a broad appeal that endured long after their split in 1988. Now, after 23 years, The Cars (with the exception of Orr, who died in 2000) are back with a new album.
