Queensryche
Emerging from the ’80s metal scene, Queensrÿche stood out from the crowd with their progressive take on the genre, drawing as much from Pink Floyd and Queen as Van Halen. Hailing from the Seattle suburb of Bellevue, the band broke into the mainstream in 1988 with the concept album Operation: Mindcrime, which featured ambitious orchestral arrangements. Its 1990 follow-up, Empire, proved to be Queensrÿche’s biggest success, cracking the US and UK Top 10 as well as MTV with its hit ballad “Silent Lucidity.” While the group’s popularity declined after the rise of grunge, Queensrÿche remain influential (and active) figures in heavy metal today.
