Eric Johnson
He’s played as a session musician for Cat Stevens and Carole King, but the Texas guitar virtuoso Eric Johnson is most famous for his brilliant instrumental rocker “Cliffs of Dover.” Featured on his 1990 release Ah Via Musicom, it is one of the greatest exercises in the history of electric guitar, and won Johnson the 1991 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. Johnson’s technical expertise and signature style, which fuses elements of rock, pop, blues, jazz, and country, has made guitar heroes like Carlos Santana, Eric Clapton, and Joe Satriani sing his praises, and touring partner Steve Vai confirm, “Eric has more colorful tone in his fingers than Van Gogh had on his palette.” Nothing beats that tone leaping off a record’s grooves.
