Marianne Faithfull
Marianne Faithfull’s is a unique story of reinvention. The English artist enjoyed a series of hits in the mid-’60s that began with her 1964 cover of the Rolling Stones’ “As Tears Go By” (released a year before the Stones’ version). These all featured her sweet vocals set to equally delicate orchestral pop arrangements. After the dissolution of her highly publicized romantic relationship with Mick Jagger, she stayed quiet for the majority of the ’70s but boldly returned in 1979 with what would become her landmark album, Broken English. The album found her writing more of her own material and singing in a much lower, ravaged voice that matched the songs’ subject matter. In the ’00s, Faithfull enjoyed another renaissance, collaborating with Beck, Damon Albarn, Billy Corgan, Jarvis Cocker, PJ Harvey, and Nick Cave, among others. Her latest album, Horses and High Heels (2011), is a collection of covers and originals recorded in New Orleans’ French Quarter and featuring guitarists John Porter and Lou Reed.
