Jefferson Airplane
Pioneers of the psychedelic rock movement, Jefferson Airplane was the first group from San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury scene to achieve international success in the late 1960s. An integral part of the Summer of Love, their 1967 album Surrealistic Pillow (on which Jerry Garcia was credited as “spiritual advisor”) was especially influential, containing the hit “Somebody to Love” and the signature vocals of Grace Slick. Going in a harder-edged, Hendrix-influenced acid rock direction, they remained highly successful album artists releasing eight consecutive Top 20 albums between 1967 and 1972. Though they never formally broke up, the band morphed into Hot Tuna and Jefferson Starship before reuniting for an album and a tour in 1989. Listening to Jefferson Airplane on vinyl is the next best thing to seeing them at Woodstock.
