The Strokes
Emerging from the Lower East Side rock scene in 2001 with their Modern Age EP, scruffy hair, skinny jeans, and melodic take on late-’70s New York punk, the Strokes catalyzed the return of guitar music in the new millennium. Their hits “Last Nite,” “Hard to Explain, and “Someday” launched full-blown Strokes Mania here and abroad, and band members Julian Casablancas (vocals), Nick Valensi (guitar), Albert Hammond, Jr. (guitar), Nikolai Fraiture (bass), and Fabrizio Moretti (drums) became household names. Influenced by the Velvet Underground and employing the twin guitar riffs of Thin Lizzy and the new wave style of the Cars, the Strokes have themselves influenced a decade’s worth of bands. They released three albums – Is This It (2001), Room on Fire (2003), and First Impressions of Earth (2006) – before going on hiatus to pursue solo projects, and return reunited in 2011 with their fourth album, Angles.
