The Rentals
The new wave project of former Weezer bassist Matt Sharp, the Rentals were formed between the release of Weezer’s 1994 self-titled debut “Blue Album” and its 1996 follow-up, Pinkerton. Combining the pop songwriting of Weezer with Moog-driven melodies and male/female vocals, the group’s 1995 debut, Return of the Rentals, produced the hit “Friends of P” and features Weezer drummer Pat Wilson, violinist Petra Haden, vocalist/keyboardist Cherielynn Westrich, and guitarist Rod Cervera. The band’s second album, released in 1999, features guests Maya Rudolph (of SNL) and members of Blur, Elastica, and Lush. The Rentals have been releasing music on and off for the past two decades, and though their players have shifted, their focus has always been on having fun.
