The Decemberists
The Decemberists are right up there with Arcade Fire in terms of bands that put indie music on the map in the ’00s. Hailing from the indie mecca of Portland, Oregon, this indie-folk/chamber-pop ensemble features the nasally, Morrissey-inflected vocals and epic storytelling of Colin Meloy, the guitar of Chris Funk, the accordion, harmonica, organ, and keys of Jenny Conlee, the bass (often upright) of Nate Query, and the drums of John Moen. Weaving theatrical tales of wayfarers and whimsical historical accounts, the Decemberists have an old-timey sound that translates magnificently to vinyl. And they don’t skimp on album art, offering some truly remarkable packaging for their six classic full-length albums and numerous EPs.
