Spiritualized
Formed in 1990 by singer/songwriter Jason Pierce, bassist Will Carruthers, drummer Jonny Mattock, and guitarist Mark Refoy after the dissolution of Spacemen 3, the English space-rock band Spiritualized has been dubbed “Phil Spector on acid” by the BBC. Though known for its psychedelic 120-musician symphonies – which beg to be listened to on vinyl – Spiritualized started out as a minimalist post-rock band. It didn’t start incorporating blues, gospel, and this wall-of-sound production until its 1997 masterpiece Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space. Another high point in Spiritualized’s career came with the release of Songs in A&E in 2008. Released after a five-year dry period and a near-death experience by Pierce, its title actually refers to the Accident and Emergency Ward, and its six “Harmony” tracks were named after cult film director Harmony Korine, whose 2008 film Mister Lonely Pierce scored.
