Queens of the Stone Age
Formed in the mid-’90s after the dissolution of frontman Josh Homme’s stoner-rock band Kyuss, Queens of the Stone Age became monoliths of the 2000’s alternative rock scene with their relentless riffs, muscular beats, and hard hooks. The ultimate musicians’ musicians, QOTSA won the praise of former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, who put his band the Foo Fighters on hold to join QOTSA for their third album, Songs for the Deaf, in 2002. A commercial breakthrough, Songs for the Deaf produced the radio hits “No One Knows” and “Go with the Flow.” (Grohl returned to his work with the Foo Fighters after the album’s release, but would team up with Homme again in 2009 to form the supergroup Them Crooked Vultures with Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones.) With five studio albums to their name and another on the way, QOTSA just keep getting tighter and their gargantuan guitar riffs are awesome on vinyl.
