Nada Surf
Though they will always be hailed for their 1996 anthem “Popular” from their Ric Ocasek-produced debut, High/Low, Nada Surf have proved themselves much more than ’90s one-hit wonders. This power-pop band celebrates its 20-year anniversary this year with another solid album, The Stars Are Indifferent to Astronomy, that beckons listeners to crawl into the speakers. After being dropped by Elektra prior to the release of their sophomore album, The Proximity Effect, Nada Surf formed their own label and independently recorded their third album, Let Go. Signing to the Seattle-based indie label Barsuk Records and releasing a lot of vinyl with them over the past decade, Nada Surf has tapped the talents of labelmates like Chris Walla and Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie on their more recent releases The Weight Is a Gift (2005) and Lucky (2008). Nada Surf’s ringing guitars and powerful rhythms are nothing short of transcendent on vinyl.
