Mogwai
Formed in Glasgow in 1995, this Scottish band has been incredibly influential in the post-rock world. Stuart Braithwaite (guitar, vocals), John Cummings (guitar), Barry Burns (guitar, keyboards), Dominic Aitchison (bass), and Martin Bulloch (drums) make a powerful concoction of mostly instrumental music that is distinct in its layers of simultaneous guitar and masterful manipulation of dynamics and distortion. Named after the famous Gremlin (that in Cantonese also means “evil spirit”), Mogwai can go from melodic whispers to devastating avalanches of sonic catharsis. Second to seeing them live, there is no better way to listen to Mogwai’s aural acrobatics than on vinyl. It is the only way to experience all the subtle (and sledgehammer) brilliance of the band’s studio work.
