Meat Puppets
The Meat Puppets are one of those bands whose influence far exceeds its fortune. Formed in 1980 by Curt Kirkwood (guitar/vocals), his brother Cris (bass), and their high school friend Derrick Bostrom (drums), the Arizona band started releasing albums on Black Flag guitarist Greg Ginn’s SST Records in 1982. Like labelmates Hüsker Dü and the Minutemen, the Meat Puppets were instrumental in the development of alternative rock. Their unique style, which incorporated punk, psychedelic rock, country, and hard rock, made a huge impact on Kurt Cobain. During Nirvana’s 1993 MTV Unplugged performance, the Kirkwood brothers joined Nirvana onstage to perform three songs from their 1983 sophomore album, Meat Puppets II: “Plateau,” “Oh Me,” and “Lake of Fire.” Though they’ve switched drummers and gone through several breakups, the Meat Puppets have been on a roll since reuniting in 2006. This is a band that cut its teeth on punk-rock 45s; vinyl is in the Meat Puppets’ DNA.
