Garbage
Formed in 1994 by super producer Butch Vig (who famously produced Nirvana’s Nevermind), his fellow producers Duke Erikson and Steve Marker, and Scottish singer Shirley Manson (whom they recruited from the group Angelfish), Garbage aimed to make pop music sound horrible. Fortunately, the result was far from horrible and the band’s 1995 eponymous debut blew up alt-rock radio with hits like “Stupid Girl” and “Only Happy When It Rains.” Garbage’s second album, 1998’s Version 2.0, matched the success of their debut, and both remain landmark ’90s albums that sound just as fresh now as they did then. After a six-year hiatus, Garbage is back with its fifth album, 2012’s critically acclaimed Not Your Kind of People. The band’s unique musical style, which was inspired by its members’ background with remixes and draws from a big sonic palette that includes pop, electronica, alt-rock, and goth, is amazing on vinyl.
