Foo Fighters
After the dissolution of Nirvana in 1994, Dave Grohl almost accepted a permanent position as Tom Petty’s drummer. Instead, he went into the studio and recorded Foo Fighters’ 1995 eponymous debut album. Featuring the singles “Big Me” and “I’ll Stick Around,” this one-man project laid the groundwork for what would become one of the most successful and enduring alternative rock bands to date. Taking its name from the term for UFOs reported by Allied WW2 pilots, Foo Fighters have earned three Grammy Awards for Best Rock Album and produced a constant string of hit singles including “Monkey Wrench,” “My Hero,” “Everlong,” “Learn to Fly,” “All My Life,” and “The Pretender.” The band now has three guitarists – Grohl, Pat Smear, and Chris Shiflett – muscling along with bassist Nate Mendel and drummer Taylor Hawkins. As hilarious as they are in their music videos, Foo Fighters’ charging melodic rock is insane on vinyl.
