  • Fiona Apple

Singer, songwriter, and pianist Fiona Apple was an immediate commercial success. The singles “Shadowboxer,” “Criminal,” and “Sleep to Dream” from her 1996 debut, Tidal, became hugely popular radio hits – yet, the world was shocked to discover that such a sultry contralto belonged to a young, fresh-faced Apple. Her second album, When the Pawn…, came in 1999 and earned a spot in the Guinness Book of Records for its long title. (The full title is a 90-word poem written by Apple.) After a series of delays, a fan-led protest directed at Sony Records, a major internet leak, and an extensive reworking, Apple’s third album, the art-pop Extraordinary Machine, was finally released in 2005 to wide critical acclaim. Highly literate lyrics, baroque arrangements, jazz phrasings, and an angsty edge are all staples of Apple’s work and all absolutely stunning on vinyl.
