  • Joy Division

Joy Division is an English rock band from the late-‘70s/early-‘80s that was extremely influential on the post-punk and goth-rock genres, and bands ranging from the Cure to U2. Fronted by the late Ian Curtis, Joy Division released its debut album, Unknown Pleasures, in 1979 on the Factory Records label. Curtis committed suicide in May of 1980, shortly after recording the band’s sophomore album. The posthumous Closer (1980) remains Joy Division’s best-selling album, along with the posthumous hit single “Love Will Tear Us Apart.” The surviving members of Joy Division would go on to form the commercially successful New Wave/synth-pop band New Order, but Joy Division remains a cult classic. Listening to Curtis’ deep, Jim Morrison-like baritone and the band’s melodic bass lines, jagged guitar riffs, dark moods, and what producer Martin Hannett called their “eerie spatiality” on vinyl is incredible.
