The Impressions
The Impressions are a classic soul group from Chicago that initially featured the talents of soul legends Curtis Mayfield and Jerry Butler. Their first hit came in 1958 with “For Your Precious Love.” Then with Mayfield as the group’s primary songwriter, the Impressions enjoyed a string of R&B hits throughout the ’60s including 1961’s Latin-tinged “Gypsy Woman,” 1963’s “It’s All Right,” 1964’s black pride anthem “Keep on Pushing,” and 1965’s gospel-influenced and socially conscious “People Get Ready,” named one of the most influential songs in rock and roll history and greatest songs of all time. The Impressions made a huge impression on Bob Marley and the Wailers in terms of their gospel-influenced vocal harmonies as well as their visual style, and they have been inducted into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Vocal Hall of Fame. Though Mayfield left the Impressions to pursue a solo career in 1970 (as Butler had done in 1960), the group continued to enjoy R&B chart success in the ’70s. A quintessential Chicago soul group, the Impressions are essential on vinyl.
