Sam & Dave
While Northern Soul artists were piling on the strings and lavish productions, Sam & Dave were dominating the R&B charts with their raw, gritty Memphis soul. Releasing a streak of Southern Soul classics during their Stax years from 1965-1968 including “Hold On, I’m Comin’” and “I Thank You,” the “Dynamic Duo” are best known for their 1967 crossover hit “Soul Man,” which helped define the soul genre and pave the way for other soul artists. They were also a big influence on everyone from Bruce Springsteen to the Blues Brothers. Listening to Sam & Dave on vinyl is sublime.
