    Best known for her 1975 hit “Poetry Man” and four-octave contralto, singer-songwriter Phoebe Snow emerged from the Greenwich Village folk cafés in the mid ‘70s and had two gold records by the time she was 26. The first of these was her 1974 eponymous debut, which shot to the Top 5 of the Billboard charts and earned Snow a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist. Phil Ramone produced its jazzier 1976 follow-up, Second Childhood. Though Snow initially dreamed of being a female Jimi Hendrix, it was her voice that came to define her legacy and diverse style (which often mixed folk, blues, jazz, rock, and soul). And its that marvelous bluesy growl that makes Snow so compelling on vinyl.
