Amy Winehouse
In many ways, Amy Winehouse was an atypical English pop star: a brutally candid singer-songwriter whose sultry contralto and songs about “Rehab” stole the attention of the world while also launching a wave of breakout British female soul singers like Adele and Florence and the Machine. Produced by hip-hop producer Salaam Remi, Winehouse’s jazz-influenced 2003 debut, Frank, was a critical success that earned her comparisons to Billie Holiday, Macy Gray, and Sarah Vaughan. But it was its 2006 follow-up, Back to Black, that broke records and made Winehouse the first British female to win five Grammys in one night. Her love of 1960s girl groups can be seen in her trademark beehive and Ronnie Spector-style makeup, and it can be heard on this album. Though Winehouse tragically died at the age of 27, her powerful, one-of-a-kind voice will forever be immortalized on vinyl.
