Return to Forever
Return to Forever is a jazz fusion group formed in 1972 by keyboardist Chick Corea. Along with the Mahavishnu Orchestra and Weather Report, Return to Forever is considered one of the three greatest jazz fusiuon groups. Return to Forever has gone through a series of lineup changes, and with each new change to the personnel, a different musical style was emerged as part of the band’s sound. The first two albums are more mellow, with spanish and latin themes, also feature the vocals of Flora Purim. Later albums feature a more rock and funk edge, with the virtuoso guitar playing of Al DiMeola. Return to Forever achieved a wide fan base of jazz and rock music fans, and was a very successful group. On vinyl, the sound of Chick Corea’s keyboards is rich and warm, Stanley Clarke’s bass sounds round and fat, and the guitar playing of Al DiMeola is electric and alive. The older albums featuring Flora Purim sound excellent as well, with her voice sounding crystal clear and exceptionally warm. Return to Forever is required listening for fans of modern jazz, as well as classic rock.
