Bing Crosby
Singer/actor/radio personality Bing Crosby was one of the best-selling artists of the 20th century. His warm baritone dominated the airwaves from the Great Depression to the mid 1950s, and his intimate singing style—which made great use of the new microphone technologies of the time—influenced crooners like Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. Crosby also had an important influence on the post-war recording industry, helping to develop everything from the laugh track to the first reel-to-reel tape recorder. His approach to music was rooted in jazz, but he incorporated a wide range of material including pop, show tunes, country songs, Irish and Hawaiian standards, and holiday favorites. The biggest hit of his career was his recording of Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas,” which remains the best-selling single of all time. Crosby demands to be heard on vinyl.
